The Melbourne Cup is over two miles, I read somewhere.
I don't know much about professional racing, but isn't that a long track?

This is yet another one of those stories that I cannot let my wife know about. She loves horses, and has already spent a lot of time ( and money ) signing petitions and being active with groups trying to save horses from slaughter ( yes, there are people around the world paying premium prices for horse meat ). And to her, these races amount to nothing but pure torture for these animals, sometimes with very sad endings, like you've just written about. But will people learn anything from these incidences? Probably not . . .

Very sad! I have loved horses since childhood, and have done a fair bit of riding and even a little jumping, but it has long since seemed to me that thoroughbreds, 'designed' for racing, have become too brittle somehow...

That is sad that horse passed away. We have had issues with race horses being pushed too hard in the States.

I'm sorry to hear of those two horses dying that way.
I hope they enjoyed their lives up until then, and will find green pastures in the next life.
