Re: JimmyA

He did indeed, Sir Wiley. Unfortunately, that 'poor choice' was apparently born out of a general fear of these police! I guess some people feel that, since they're taking a risk either way, they'd rather be on their own. It's a shame . . .

Re:

Me too, Annicita. You don't want to be in the middle of that ( if you can help it, of course! ) It's just a shame that these things continue to happen, and the resulting rioting just makes it worse! But, as you can see from my blog's tale, there seems to be a great divide between the police and certain citizens in some areas. 'Civil unrest' may just be the beginning . . .

Re:

Obviously there's good and bad everywhere, Carolyn, and in some places, the 'bad' is to the point that, even though people may actually need the POH LEECE from time to time, they still fear them in general. That's not a good thing . . .

well right now there are riots and utter chaos in one of the burbs close to where i live in st louis....an 18 year old who was supposedly unarmed and minding his own business was shot to death....the community reacted violently with people streaming in from all over and wreaking havoc...rioting, looting....just too much...so glad i am not there

I don't get too messy when it comes to the POH LEECE. I'm grateful we have them though some are notably poor specimens.

Re:

Well, TAPS, let's hope that never happens! But you're right; it would all depend on the circumstance. I'd have to look at it this way: if you're in desperate need of assistance, for any reason, and a police officer, who is basically hired and trained to help you, offers you that very same help, you should be able to accept it with little or no trepidations! However, there are some people who simply can't, and an unfortunate incident like this is the end result . . .

Re:

That's good to know, mneme. The police in my area are also very reputable, and there's never been anything like this to occur around here! But in some places, there seems to be constant tension between the police and a vast majority of the citizens. Who knows what it might finally take for both sides to trust each other . . .

Re:

It absolutely was, lovelylady. I don't know what that victim thought the police were going to do, other than what they said they would do: drive him a few blocks to a gas station! But, that's what a negative reputation can do for certain groups . . .

Re:

Isn't it amazing, FSI, that the police in counties right next to each other could have such different reputations for themselves! But that's probably the way it is around the world. One group is helpful and trustworthy, the next group act like they serve under Heinrich Himmler . . .

Re:

I will, Kabu, I will! And not just because of her 'shopping habits!'  And I can understand your reluctance to make an appearance around any policeman! With some of them, their 'authority' goes to their head, and even though your tax dollars pay their salaries, we must still live in fear of a few. It's a shame sometimes . . .

Re: JimmyA

That's great for you, Bill, but now the question stands: would you consider that the norm, or was that the exception? If you had caught that captain on a 'bad night,' the circumstances may have turned out differently . . .

Re: Jimmy

You're probably right, Naut. And even though I don't live all that far from where this particular incident took place, I believe I would also accept a ride from the police in my area. But like I wrote, some police departments get that negative reputation, and it's sometimes very difficult to shake . . .

I don't know.  It is unlikely that I will be out on a dark street wandering around anymore unless I get amnesia or Alzheimers dementia.

Yes.  I have never felt I had anything to fear from our police.

Absolutely!  Such a needless, preventable tragedy.

In the county I live in, I am very comfortable with the police. In the counties where I work, I would not trust the police there as far as I could throw them...I would feel comfortable enough, though, to accept an offer of a ride.

i wouldn't care to walk past a policeman up here day or night...I may blog why today...

Oh and your beautiful wife only takes a half hour to decide on an item in a store!!! Man you are a lucky guy. Hang onto her tight.

öOnce I ran out of gas. I accepted a ride to the police station with the police captain. He arranged for the gas station owner in town to come and bring a gas can to get me home to my town. The police captain drove me back to my car where we met the gas station owner Jimmy. Excellent. BC-A, Bill’s RRRst

To "Serve and Protect" is the aim, but as we all know, aims are not always achieved. But yes, I would instantly and without the slightest reservation accept a ride from one of our excellent cops - there just ain't no safer way to get around, LOL...
