Re:
Really, Annicita? I so rarely come across someone who actually dislikes the same type of music I do. So I guess if you and your friends were hanging out at a McDonald's, and they started to play rap, opera or country/western, you'd be inclined to leave too, huh? Kudos . . .

Re:
It's always easy to see, lustor, that people's tastes in music are going to be as diverse as people's taste in movies, books, restaurants, etc. There are some country/western songs and music that I can handle as low, background music, and some soft rock has its moments with me as well. But, like everyone else, I like what I like, and dislike what I dislike. And I had a pretty good feeling that we all pretty much have the same disdain for rap music, which is really a contradiction in terms . . .

Re:
I know exactly what you mean, TAPS. Even if it's simply background music, if it's a style or genre that I really can't stand, it becomes like an irritating gnat buzzing around my ear that I simply cannot ignore! It must be swatted before my head explodes . . .

Re:
It really is, Justi. Although it is somewhat disheartening that the kids are so put off by classical music, at least it's a non-violent, non-belligerent way for that McDonald's to accomplishing their goal. I think we're going to be reading about more and more places adopting this particular strategy in the near future . . .

Re:
I'm sure they would, C C T. Throw in a harp and a cello, along with a bassoon and a pair of flutes, and they'll have those tiny ears bleeding in no time. Meanwhile, the rest of us who actually enjoy this type of music will be immune. One man's Kryptonite . . .

Re:
That's probably true, Kabu. Like they say, an ounce of prevention . . . I guess you can't really blame the McDonald's for taking such actions, but at least they did it as subtly as possible, under the circumstances. Better to simply drive the kids off than to make them overly angry where they might consider taking some kind of revenge on the establishment . . .

Re: Jimmy
That's fine, Naut. To each his own. I think one of my biggest problems with opera is that many of them are in another language, and need to be interpreted so I can follow along. Perhaps if more were simply done in English, I might have a better appreciation. Of course, that genre has brought us the metaphor of the "fat lady singing," so I guess it's not all bad . . .

Re:
I believe, FSI, that may fall under the heading of inconsideration. Over the years, whenever I was with any group of friends, I always had an inkling of what music they liked, and what they didn't. I know I don't like to be forced to hear certain types of music, and I would always make sure not to force my music on any of them. It would be nice if everyone thought that way . . .

Re: I love their tactic!
I have to agree, Jemmie. Sometimes the cure is as bad as the ailment. The music is succeeding in driving away the loiterers, but probably at the cost of ticking off the poor, innocent neighbors. There's got to be a happy medium . . .

Re: I'd probably stay for an extra cup of coffee if the McDonalds closeby
So would I, Rumor. Like I wrote, I do like my hard rock, but not when I'm in a restaurant . . . any type of restaurant . . . and trying to eat and socialize. Something soft in the background is always good for the digestion . . .

it just shows how music can affect us in different ways, I agree with you when it comes to RAP but some country western I like and I enjoy the soft rock

When I love music, I love it. When there is music that I can't stand, it drives me nuts. I can't stand the music of some cultures.....like the oriental plinking sounds of the pipa, erhu and guzheng.

Well I don't like that drum beat music bump bump bump . I wouldn't stay if that was around. I agree a good idea though sound can have subtle effects on folk. Perhaps violins would send the youths packing.

Good for McDonald's! And I share your distaste for Rap and C&W, but when it come to Opera we part company - I love it...

It is interesting how the sounds of music effect different people...At the car wash, we often have to deal with customers blaring music (normally rap) and having to tell them to turn the music down.

I love their tactic!
But I would be a bit upset if I were the neightbor they woke at 1am because they were playing it too loudly. I don't care how wonderful the music, if it disturbs my slumber, I am not a happy camper.
