Good for you, Annicita! I'm sure there are many people who share my ( our ) sentiment on this. But the problem is, for every one of us who won't go to the stores on Thanksgiving, there will be at least a dozen who will! What's wrong with people today . . . ?

Re: I agree 110%!
They do indeed, Jemmie. And I also agree with everything you've said as well! So, just what the heck is wrong with our society today? Are people this easily lead about by the "consumer mentality" that now Thanksgiving will be sacrificed and become just another shopping day? Where do we go from here . . . ?

I don't blame you, Against. And I don't think I will be going near any store until some time in January! Thanks for weighing in . . .

Re:
That is terrible, calia, although I can't honestly blame that woman for being so upset! I have already heard on the news that several workers in many different stores that are slated to open on Thanksgiving are filing formal protests against their employers for even suggesting such a thing. I do hope they succeed immensely . . .

Re:
Thanks, Kabu. I had a feeling that I wouldn't get too many dissenters. Yes, many people have gone from worshiping God to worshiping the almighty dollar, and everyone else seems to suffer for it! And I am aware of those soapbox rants in Hyde Park! I think I would love the chance to orate over there . . .

Re:
Good idea, lovelylady. But there's just one problem: the amount of revenue generated by the stores being open on Thanksgiving will probably outweigh any politician's belief that doing such a thing should be considered wrong. Yes, it is indeed sad, and infuriating, to see what Madison Avenue is doing to our holidays . . .

It is indeed, FSI. At first, it was quick to blame the stores and merchandizers for even suggested such a thing. But as long as any part of the masses complies and blindly falls into this "trap," such things will continue. Like C C T said, soon they will opening on Christmas Day! Terrible . . .

Re:
Good for you, TAPS! It does seem a little ridiculous, doesn't it? I mean, are people this so hard up to find a few savings here and there that they will sacrifice such a wonderful and important holiday like Thanksgiving? What a society we live in today . . .

I have a feeling, C C T, that you may be right, although I would hate to see that too. But even the promise of joyful carolers and a free mince pie won't get me into any stores on Christmas . . .

Good for Canada, Naut! And no, I don't see that as a holier-than-thou statement. I see that as people using a little common sense, and having at least some concern for their employees. Perhaps us colonists can learn something from our cousins in the Great White North . . .

Actually, lustor, I was hoping that no one here in Blog-it would be directly affected by this announcement, meaning I was hoping that no one would have to work on Thanksgiving, or Black Friday! Do you think a protest of sorts may be in order . . . ?

I agree 110%!
When I was growing up, you didn't even think about Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving. You didn't buy a Christmas tree or put up decorations or even think about your Christmas list until Thanksgiving was over and done with.
These days, I am seeing Christmas deco on sale in October before Halloween!!! I am reading status updates on Facebook about people who are planning their Black Friday shopping trips from the moment the ads hit the stores (which seems to happen earlier and earlier each year--this year, I think I saw the first post about a plan two weeks ago.)
I am SORRY! There is a reason for Christmas, and it IS NOT presents or shopping or getting the best deal!
People need to step back and take a hard look at things.

I wholly share your sentiments, Jimmy. I do not understand all of this shopping craze. To me, Thanksgiving should mean something. To me, Black Friday is just another day, and on that day I do not go anywhere near the malls.

I so agree with you Jimmy! I am finally out of the greedy restaurant industry, where I have worked Christmas and Thanksgiving for years now, and I intend to voice my displeasure at anyone having to work those holidays by not participating in any of this disgusting madness. One particular image sticks in my mind of a server crying on Christmas day because she had to leave her children to come to work and a customer had just berated the poor woman and said she had "Ruined her Christmas" because her food took a little longer to come out of the kitchen.

Great soap Box rant...you should be on a real soap box in Hyde Park in London UK for you have real things to say.
To me the World really does just worship greed; getting money; buying rubbish with money... good post; well done and totally agreed with by me.

Jimmy...
I love the Thanksgiving holiday...accept for, as I've posted here countless times before, those damned adverts that start on Thanksgiving Day and don't stop until the day after the New year holiday. This infuriates me no end...
Tragically, we have lost the true meaning of Thanksgiving. I wonder if we'll ever find a way to get it back.
Now, as you write here, it's all about where and what to buy...The gimmie syndrome, as I call it.
This not only makes me angry, but more so sad. I think it needs to be made illegal once more for stores to be open on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

I am not too keen on what the holiday season has become, especially with all of this Black Friday stuff. I will not shop on Thanksgiving nor will I shop on Black Friday itself...It is sad to see what people are doing to their families.

WELL Jimmy Christmas will be next that could be the big one. Queues outside stores singing carols through the night big smiles on faces until the big stampede at 6am Christmas morning and a free mince pie.

I agree with everything you've said here - it's just sad and disheartening! I should tell you (and this is not meant to be a holier-than-thou statement!) that most of the stores were closed on our Thanksgiving, back in October...
