I think its because Im ground level with whatever might be under my bed! oh... and my cats don't help. they wake me up in the middle of the night using me as a floor....

losing weight helps my back

the holiday pounds I put on (about 8- after losing 35 pounds this past year) has my back feeling worse that it ever did before... floor sleeping works for me if I put pillow under my knees, as my healthy butt causes a curve in my spine at the bottom..

I also plan on getting one of those astro foam pads as my  new matress did nothing for me either..even with two layers of down padding on top of it.

good luck.. I am currently on muscle relaxers and once my fast is over, if I haven't already lost the weight from that, I will get  be very conscious about taking it off, and losing another 30 pound to boot.

ps.  you HAVE to exercise... stretching makes a huge difference.

Hey kid, most back pain is caused when the spine contracts. it needs to
be stretched.  You do this by lying on the floor, on your back, bring up your knees to your chest and wrap your arms around your knees and gentle pull streaching your spine.  Don't pull too hard the first time since it can cause extra pain.  Just do this every day, and you pain will go away and say away if it's caused by the spine.  Takes about a minue or two.  Works for me, and I have a pinched nerve in my spine. Try it, can't hurt.

jenny---

I CANT sleep flat on my back... I'd have to be inexplicably exhausted to sleep on my back.

I do find that I sleep better on a semi-firm mattress... but I don't have the money for it, And adding extra bedspreads will at least work to relieve pressure points from the springs....

My back is straight up from my butt-crack (for lack of a better term) and curves when it reaches just below shoulder-blade level. It curves again toward my brain stem.....  It is a pretty normal back from what I've seen... and the nurses at school never said anything during the scoliosis (sp?) exams in school... but then, they are only trained to find scoliosis(sp???) when they look....

*sigh

I think my back might hurt because I have a long torso and am a little- top heavy. I'm only a C cup, but I feel the need to slouch anyway....

Does your back naturally have a high arch in the lower/dorsel area? Adding a lot of covers will make it soft, but soft isn't actually good for some people. A firm matress may work better. Try sleeping on the floor for one night, flat on your back. After everyone is asleep, lock your door and lay on the floor, give it 30 min. and let me know if your muscles feel like they've felt better after stretching flat for awhile. I'll be checking back!- Jen

Try a NASA Astrofoam (not astroturf) memory foam pad
I have a very bad back, and it helped me more than any new mattress ever did.  You can also buy the mattresses, but they are not cheap, and if it doesn't work...well, you are no better off, are you?

I Do!
Been in Physical Therapy 3 times!  Tried everything to get rid of it--short of surgery, that is.  Have you gone to the doctor for your pain?
