I am always hearing awful stories about the kids these days, dont know what it is but it seems the parents are at fault.  A couple the other day in PHX left a small child in the back of the car over 100 degrees F and left it for hours they claimed it was in the car and of course it was dead when they found it.  Almost every day you hear of a child wandering out to a swiming pool and drowing.  Where are the brains of these parents?

Indeed things have changed . . . for the worse! Kids are not allowed to be kids anymore, at least here in the states. All it took was for one child to be injured, or one child to feel left out, or one child to feel picked on or isolated, and the entire arena would be forever altered! Remember, the needs of the few apparently out-weigh the needs of the many . . . going against all of Mr. Spock's logic! I'm so glad I grew up when I did, and could have fun without boundaries or restrictions . . .

I guess it is the same the world over Kabu. where ever did all these

 crackpots come from.

I suppose in the old days people were more worried about getting the next meal

than indulging in lascivious behavior. Idleness breeds wantonness one suspects.

Outstanding post. Alertness is required today for self to enjoy and allow children to create and have fun. As the world has changed we must too for safety, survival and fun.

In the big cities there is real danger now days, there always has been, and yet I ran the streets unsupervised and had a ball, at least I think I had a ball, but then I wouldn't wish my childhood on anyone...I do keep my grandchildren close...But I'm a worrier. My grandson and one grand daughter play organized sports in the summer, they have a ball and it only costs 20 bucks, or four happy meals, its great entertainment for me too. However it was a different story when I was on the ranch in a rural setting, the kids that did not have to work had the run of the town and no worries of pedophiles...Or did they?

I think it is sad that children have to be watched all the time to keep

them from harm. Sad indeed that danger has curtailed their freedom. Loved the post.

Looking back at the past, I wonder how I at times survived different situations...A very interesting read that has me thinking about past summers.

Son #1 and Son #3 and I were just talking about how we all grew up free and easy and the difference in being a child today.  Good post.

Kabu

My childhood too was entirely different from what we see today! But the entire West has succumbed to an insufferable nannyism...

I see country childhoods were something like Australia.  I don't even see how I survived some of the things I did.  Today's world is so much nastier with more pervs and bulllies, I understand why parents are urged to be more protective; it is sad though.

Kabu...

We used to put together spur-of-the-moment ball games...softball or hardball, and some of the best players were the girls...no, we didn't have an umpire (didn't need one - we were just playing for fun...another favourite of almost everyone's was hide-n-seek...

no one needed to tell us to use sunscreen or drink lots of water - we did it automatically...summers always flew by as we were never bored...

I believe there's a common thread in our conversations

Kabu. Just a day or so ago my son and I were talking about those long summer days unsupervised, how the kids organized their ball games, etc. We were shaking our heads over the trip we took in 1970, a 7,000 mile round trip around the country, pulling a pop-up camper, no seat belts. How'd we ever survive all that fun???
