Very sad alzheimers is. My brother Mike O is in an institution now and wouldn't be able to recognize us if we went. God Bless you and George for what you both do, much love to you both from us.

You and George are accomplishing a lot in making the lives of those poor soul happier, but it must be depressing for you at times - I'm sure it takes a lot of strength...

Most of us have made wrong decisions mixed in with right and good decisions.  Some have not seemed to have much of a chance right from the beginning.  It is good that some loving people try to right some of the wrongs and help those who need help so badly.

my daughter has told me about some alzheimer's people trying to trick the care givers so they can sneak out, but usually the caregiver isnt tricked.

Yes I remember, not anymore. They must be where they can be cared for. My mother was a victim of Alzheimer's and my daddy would not let anyone take care of her but himself and some times it was almost too much for him. I was an only child and had two children still at home and making my own and their living so I was not available to do anything much. It is a difficult disease!

They are, at least the one we work in, are very different. They have good medical personnel. Excellent help and great privately owned facility. The issues are still heart breaking but the place is great for those who have to be there.

Many years ago Justi, of course folk did not live so long in those days. I speak of  the villages, if a person had dementia she or he would wander around and it was all familiar. Today apart from the safety aspect everything is strange and the afflicted person does need love and reassurance , sadly this is lacking usually. I am afraid there are not enough people like you and George  who are willing to give so much for so little.

So many with mental health or dementia issues have been thrown under the

bus. That is my experience and until the right amount of money is put aside for mental health it isn't going to get better.

For a few years after so many of the institutes were closed...most needed to be...we worked with group homes. Supervised yes, and some more than others, but group homes held elements of normality no institute could provide. Of course it was expensive and being that most issues become chronic, not very rewarding for the public to be interested in. Sadly, in Sydney anyway, the houses were sold and the people in them were thrown onto their own resources....hence, disaster. You are really brave and special and admirable how regardless of your own health you and George battle on to help lost souls, to bring some other way to them.

sorry I got carried away

I really wish I had answers for you but I do not. George and I are researching some stuff right now that I will write on when we have some conclusive information. We must do something. We have a world decline in so much and much of that can do a number on the mental illness and of course the drugs and alcohol is getting worse which also takes a toll on the brain function. Thank you for your comment.

A sincere, powerful and compassionate post, Justi. For sure more of us have to reach out to help, but I'm wondering just how we can put a stop to the increase of deteriorating mental health in the world? Is it an increase, or just that we hear more about it, or admit it more now? How do we reverse the trend? In the meantime, people like you and George are shining examples of what is so desperately needed.
