Smart solution! Kudos to your Dad...
People who are very capable and/or highly intelligent frequently become arrogant, unfortunately. I have someone like that in my family and have seen a bit beyond the veneer of their arrogance. Surprisingly, there is lots of insecurity and not real high self esteem..maybe based on a distorted (or not) view of other people's expectations.
