Oh Dear!
Firstly, if a contractor dug up your property, they should be coming back to deal with the mess. I would assume (hope!) that the hole has been left because they are planning on coming back to do further work.
Secondly, if your gas line is running in (or anywhere near) the plumbing, the gas company will generally not allow the use of mechanical digging equipment - they should, however, either provide you with an alternative or do the digging themselves.
I deal with our local gas company all the time (at least twice a day), and sadly they are pretty unhelpful group. I find the best way to reach a solution is to put my foot down and refuse to take "no" for an answer. Between the plumber and the gas company, they should be able to find a solution - nag them until they do!!
Good Luck!

good luck on that one, my daughter notified me that something was causing water in her bedroom near the closet. The manager will look at it this afternoon. Who knows what is going on, good luck to both of us

I feel for you! And are you telling us that, on top of everything, it's raining?

Bless your hearts! I know how difficult plumbing issues can be! Praying for a quick resolution that does not cost you and George an arm and a leg!

Sorry, Justi, but I don't understand your sentence 'it appears we may be all the way into the street'. Do you mean your sewer system is all the way out there? If the gas company rans their pipes through your system, causing the problem, they should be the ones paying for the reoairs, right? Poor you! Those kind of things are so annoying!
