I understand the difficulties involved! But the way I see it, you have a choice between being made more or less permanently uncomfortable by your inconsiderate children, or having one, possibly also uncomfortable, moment with them where you simply define the boundaries you want to establish; and I'm sure you can do that nicely but firmly. And if that should put them in a snit for a day or two, I'm sure they'll get out of it and in the end will come to understand...
