Re:

So were we, mariss! It would have been one thing if we knew that he was talking about specific streets. But the way he had phrased it made it even more confusing, and that much more of a relief once we understood. Good ol' dad . . . !

Re:

Perhaps, jean, perhaps! Yes, it was quite the discovery, and quite the relief once we realized what he had actually been talking about all those years! Glad you liked this tale . . .

Re: Jimmy

I'm not sure, Justi. I don't think he would have angry or upset if we had figured it out. In fact, he may have even been proud that we did, and that we took the time to investigate it at all! Either way, I guess he just wanted to keep mum about it for as long as possible . . .

It would relieve me to know what that meant.  Glad you found it.

Jimmy

That is such a cool story. Do you think he thought you kids knew especially after you were older?

Re:

I'm sure it is, Collene. My wife and I don't have any children, but I did grow up with 15 nieces and nephews, and I think I may have heard them all as well! Of course you can't get angry at any of them when they do ask something that we, as adults, may deem "inappropriate." All you can do is chuckle, try to more or less correct them, and move on . . .

Re:

Thanks, chuck. Yeah, that was a doozy for the longest time! But what a relief when it was finally solved . . . !

Very good, I like how he refused to explain lol!  My 3 year old is a big question asking little person too as they all are! Some of it very funny and inappropriate.

Very interesting story. The mystery is solved.

That poor mouse! I guess you've got to "let up" on the little fella once in a while . . .

Thanks, mneme. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it's usually never a bad thing to take the occasional stroll down memory lane . . .

Re:

Thanks, C C T. To be perfectly honest, knowing dad's "drinking habits" in those days, it wouldn't have surprised me if he was heading for a pub! But it still wouldn't have explained what Mike's and Jake's really were!

Re: LOL...and it really did make sense when you finally found out the mystery

I think I will be pleasantly surprised too, Kabu! I know what a wigwam is, I know what a goose is, and I know what a bridle is. But when you put them altogether . . . !

Thanks, Wiley. And if you liked that one, wait until you read my next post . . .

Re:

Thanks, sam. It was almost like looking for something tirelessly, and then, some time after more or less giving up, you find it anyway! How many times has someone asked, "Who was the actor who starred in this movie or that movie?" You think and think and think, but draw a complete blank. Then, three hours later while you're doing the dishes or something, it suddenly comes to you! That's kinda what it was like!

Re:

It really was, FSI. That comment drove me crazy for years! But at the same time, I just knew there was a rational source behind it for my father! Yep, mystery finally solved! And what, you don't know any Chinese guys with red hair and freckles named Corky either?

Re:

I actually thought so too, lustor. Like I wrote, when my grandmother passed away, my brothers and sisters and I were very, very young, and for one reason or another, no one had ever gone back to that "old neighborhood" after my grandfather sold that house and moved away! If any of us had, we probably would have stumbled upon the source of my father's unusual response a lot sooner!

Re:

Yeah, adnohr, it was probably a very short time afterward! I think it may have happened around a holiday, when the bulk of my family would have gathered together anyway. Ya know what it was kinda like? Discovering how a magician does a certain trick. Once revealed, you say "Oh, that's what that was all about! Now it makes sense!" Glad you liked this tale . . .

Re: Jimmy

Yeah, it did take a while, Naut, but I think it was worth it. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what my father's reaction might have been if we had uncovered this little secret while he was still alive. Would he have been proud, or would he have been just slightly disappointed that the source of his unusual retort was no longer a secret? I hope I get the chance to ask him some day . . .

Old habits die hard, I suppose ir would have been difficult to explain to a little boy. You were lucky that he was not going up strit to pub. Nice memory though.
