I have a problem with shrews they snarl and stand on their back legs, very scary if you are an elf. I don't like running things over on the road encase they are just injured and how do you treat a black panther grr.

Killing any of Gods creatures just for the fun of it is sick and wrong and not what I was trying to get at. Next year my wife and I plan on getting chickens, but I assure you we will only eat the eggs and the old girls will die of old age and get a proper burial as I could not bring myself to put one on the chopping block. I mean we plan on giving them names for heavens sake, but at the same time my wife and child would not play and work in a garden with a rattle snake in it. It is a simple matter of math. Loved ones vs. Venomous snake = dead snake. However we do have garter snakes in the garden.

Kabu

I could not live in your beautiful country. It is beautiful but if I were the family who had the snake eggs in their garden and could not hunt down and blow both of them away I would move... out of the country. When the law of the land favors animals over humans may they also find a way for the animals to provide for the humans. Crazy... I am glad you are in Canada. Come down here and visit and if one of our copper heads or rattlers get after you if you don't shoot them the cops will, DO NOT PET THEM....

A driver in Olympia, WA a few years ago was charged with animal cruelty

when he deliberately ran down a mama possum and her babies.  Judge threw it out of court on the grounds they were just possums.

I think how we treat other living things reflects what kind of people we are, whether it's snakes, possums, or the neighbor's dog. I don't say we should never kill.  Only, we should have a better reason than amusement to, for instance, kill slugs by salting them.

Yes Kabu, it is a funny world we live in, and I have to think that every law was well intended. I have always wanted to visit your home land, it seems so beautiful in the pictures and shows we see and on TV. We here in the west we think so much about what and where we live, the dangers and the beauty and when I see movies like The Man From Snowy River, Quigley Down Under and many, many others I see almost a mirrored image of the west...Other than all the pionus creepy crawlies you all live with. Makes a man afraid to pull his boots on.

They should let some of them go to protect people within reason.  Extremes are always disturbing to me.  Getting around them may be best in some cases.

Most of that seems to come down to common sense. Personally, I think there should be more laws to protect the wildlife, especially the wildlife people take for granted and treat terribly. Sometimes people should put themselves in the animal's position, and say to themselves "How would I act or respond?" especially when it comes to self-defense. Just a thought . . .

It is ashame that there are laws that are putting people in danger.

Kabu

It's always that old 'swing-of-the-pendulum' thing: It seems nigh impossible to find a properly balanced position...

We used to think of animals - even dogs & cats - as livestock. They

worked for their keep, herding the cows, guarding the house, catching mice in the barn, etc. But these days we've personified them - we don't credit them with being dangerous. I saw a man sit a year-old child on a black bear's neck in the Great Smoky Mountain national park one time. It was a wild bear that had lost its fear of humans. Lucky for all the park ranger was there, and he ran the bear down the hill before the stupid man got himself or his baby slashed to ribbons. It was different when the majority of people lived on the farm or in rural areas - they were more in touch with nature.
