Re:

Thanks, mneme. Like I wrote, I usually come up with a terrific comeback the next day! I think I may have even impressed myself on that one, if I do say so myself!

Jimmy, I thought your answer was brilliant... I am never so nimble and just wouldn't have known what to say.

Re: JimmyA

That was my thought too, Wiley, but then I thought about the likely resulting punch/bar brawl etc.  Great for the soaps but what do you do in real life.

Re: Jimmy

Naughty, Naut..  you might also have got yourself a black eye!!

Re:

Thanks, Annicita. It was somewhat of a strange and scary moment, one I'm thankful I came out of unscathed! I'm also glad that I rarely run into individuals like that!

Re: your answer is brilliant as is Taps and Wiley. I am really impressed

Well, that might have been an option for you, Kabu.  But my back was more or less against the wall with this person, and the "retort gods" looked favorably upon me that night! Yes, one of the few times in my life that I had a quick and potent response ready! Who knows if I'll ever be that lucky again!

Re: JimmyA

You could have, Wiley, but like I wrote, that may or may not have satisfied this particular antagonist. Perhaps that's the kind of response he was hoping for, someone more or less getting back up in his face, which could have lead to fisticuffs. Who knows with people like that?

Re:

Thanks, Utah. Fortunately, encounters such as these are rare for me, regardless of the setting or the people involved. Like I wrote, I'm usually not a "quick thinker," and most of the time would have stumbled over any response of any kind. I guess I got lucky that time!

Re:

Probably not, C C T. As I wrote, he was like a heat-seeking missile, moving from person to person, and from group to group, just trying to bait someone into an argument for some reason. At least my encounter was relatively brief and painless. Some people . . .

good response

your answer is brilliant as is Taps and Wiley. I am really impressed

for like you I usually have a wonderful reponse.... the next day. Of course myself being the wimp that I am, I would tell Wiley that I was being sexually harassed and then take of for the girls room.

JimmyA

Good for you, I probably would have said something like my sex life wasn't any of his business and leave him to think whatever he wished.

You did good

That was Brill Jimmy, that type of aggression just seeks a victim. No use trying to score.

Re:

Thanks, FSI. I must say that I really amazed myself on that one, because I'll be the first to admit that I'm usually not very good at "quick comebacks or responses." I'm the kind that usually thinks of something clever or witty to say the next day!

Re:

Yeah, TAPS, I can see a scenario going down like that. With this particular individual though, it seemed better to not push the subject itself. Just give him some type of answer and keep your fingers crossed that he leaves your presence shortly afterward! Sometimes I don't mind engaging people on an exchange of thoughts and opinions, but not in that case!

Re:

I wish I knew, luster. I don't even remember who he came with. And like I wrote, I especially never knew why he played the role of "antagonist" most of the night. I guess some people are just like that.

Re:

Thank you, thank you, adnohr. I guess it's like any other type of intelligence you gather over the years . . . there's almost no use in collecting it unless you plan on using it! Hopefully I won't be in a similar situation anytime soon. My "arsenal" of bullshit is limited!

Re: Jimmy

That may have worked as well, Naut, but I might have been in a bit of trouble if he had called my bluff and did indeed "present" me with one! Now I'd have two people to avoid offending! It's never easy, is it?

Oh yes, bullshit works extremely well...That was a clever response on your part.

I always liked Ann Landers' suggested comeback to stupid questions and I employed it often and it almost always is effective:  "Why would you want to know that?"
The only person it never worked on for me was my mother-in-law.  She would say, "I have a right to know," and then ask her stupid question again.

Perfect answer! Smart brother you have there, with good advice, and he's got a smart brother too for remembering to use it!

Jimmy

You handled that well, better that I would have. I would probably have said, "Why, are you offering me one?"
