Re: Justi

I finally remembered why I can't remember where it was.  I was with Sis and she was driving and I was talking a mile a minute when I suddenly saw it and scared her to death when I yelled, "Oh look!"  LOL

They truly are delicate. You can see the first day of the blossom totally white and then the second day it has turned completely brown......

Yes, I bet you are the woman in a red dress. They are Southern. A Yankee visitor told me once that no wonder there was a myth about the South that we were all laid back and a bit over zealous about sex. He said he understood that when he smelled the Magnolias and the Gardenia. He said the Magnolias made him think of making love in the jungle and the Gardenia said let us do that again away from the eyes of others. After that declaration I took my leave.

Oh I am glad we can grown int he ground a lot more than containers. I do grow in them but I would never have enough space for all the containers I would want. I love flowers.

Re: Kabu Me too, it is sad that dear John Wiley can't really travel far

any more and neither can you. Scones and tea, Oh yum. Something that I indulge in always at my sister's place. She makes great scones.

My Dad died just after he had really had to put Mum into a Nursing home...broke his heart and I thought I would hate her if anything happened to him. She looked so helpless and alone when we went to see her (we never told her Dad had died) how could you hate her! I guess I started forgiving her then. Of course then I worked with the elderly nursing for years after that and one day realized that the love for Mum had resurfaced and I could mourn her properly. She died in 1990, six months after Dad. So long ago now. And I have been blessed not to have lost a child or Grandchild, I have dearest Wiley. My blessings are too many to count. You and George rank high on my list. xxxxxx

A nice ode to the flower, Justi. It's true, when I think of magnolias, they are automatically associated with 'down south'. I get a vision much like Nautikos.

Yes they are lovely Justi  sadly our soil is limestone based and container grown plants are the only option. Lovely description though.

I saw a southern magnolia tree in bloom here yesterday while I was out driving.  It was so pretty and now I can't remember where I saw it.  I wanted to go back and take a picture of it.

Oh darling I am so sorry that your mother had Alzheimer's that is a disease straight from hell. I am so sorry for your pain, now you know but when it is happening and you already have your hands full it seems like the worst thing in the world is happening; your mother hates you, which of course, she did not, it just felt like that. You are such a precious lady. I would love to sit and have tea and scones and talk for a while.

Re: Kabu well I didn't /don't know a lot about Magnolia so I thought

that my Pink one was quite ordinary. LOL tho. it was beautiful and a joy.

Mother ended her life with that terrible Alzheimer's so no she turned really nasty and kicking and thought that I was her sister. I felt that I lost my Mum somewhere in my thirties. But then years after it was all behind us, I got over all the pain and anger and that was when I began to associate her with the soft colors. Remembered that she was a dear.

Nautikos

Oh, I love Charleston. Your painting is so representative of the South except that we are far more multifaceted than outsiders know. So much of the world has no inkling of what the South is really like or about. I would love to see that painting. Thanks for the comment.

I have these visions of the South - sitting with a lovely lady in red among the magnolias of a stately mansion in Charleston, sipping a mint julep...

Kabu

How interesting Kabu, I never saw a pink Magnolia.  I don't particularly associate Magnolia perfume with with the mellow lady but the perfume of the flower which is much softer and more elegant than the distilled oil. I bet your mother was delicate in her later years.

I always associate the Magnolia with the Southern States of America

although many years ago when I lived in Wagga Wagga which has such hot Summers I had a pink Magnolia in the front yard. Lovely post dear one. Actually I associate my Mother with Lavender, not that she ever wore Lavender perfumes but the soft colorsas she faded into her disease.

What a sweet thing to say about your mom.

posted by Justi on June 4, 2012 at 8:38 AM | link to this | reply

A very nice comparison. I always view my mom as a fully-bloomed rose . . . soft, sweet, beautiful, colorful, full of life . . . and always there to lift my spirits.
