Well sadly Bob you will ,not want to come again unless another brilliant theory arises.
Thank you for your reply I will add it to my memoirs. We usually talk about girly things here, you know girdles and such, more up your Ginny's street. Is it not adrenaline that pumps in vain sometimes,we won't mention plumbing. Try and get as much sleep as you can,I do.

I have been in places and situations where there is a very fine line between instinct and still being alive, believe me, we are not so far from that cave as we like to think we are.

Re: I wonder if we're as far "out of the cave" as we think we are.
Well in future I shall approach all ladies with a very downtrodden look. I don't think they do it so much if there is a crowd of them. I know what you imply, sometimes I see young women walking at night and think if it is wise.

From the female perspective, the evaluation process you mention, the instant risk assessment, is part of the survival instinct (especially if a woman has been exposed to threat). We ask ourselves if this one smiles to be friendly -- or has he sized her up as a target? Is this guy attracted to me, or is it a pretense so he can get access to my young children? I suspect this characteristic is handed down genetically, and may be why we still watch out for cave bears.

PS - Your point about the psychological "residue" of these
instincts is well-taken - what do we do with these urges we no longer need so desperately? Toddlers probably display a lot of them before acquiring the veneer of civilization and the need to be a successfully social being.
Damn it, CC, now you have me thinking and I won't sleep. Apparently I find it hard to shut up, too. Good night!

the attention, but it's a rare condition for us to find ouselves in these days. We can handle our threats by refusing to think about them, hiring a lawyer, seeing a shrink, begging for mercy, taking a pill - but the beast coming after you has to be dealt with with anything you have at hand at the moment. The threats that come up on our radar screens these days are bad enough, but not like the dangers or needs that you (incidentally!) describe so vividly! A lifetime of living on the edge of fear and defence and aggression has to hone your personality and instincts to a rather unpleasant edge. Friendship as such could beproblematical with someone who tends to evaluate you either as a useful ally or as potential risk. I shudder to think of it.
Interesting topic! Thanks for the invitation. I've never been off the poetry blog before!

Re:
Well Sam I was a bit apprehensive as to the reaction to this, but I do feel that a lot of mental problems are a residue of reactions which we no longer need constantly. This is a lay man's example of course.

Our mind is an interesting part of the evolutionary process. It's amazing all of the problems that can start or go within.
