I think I might have picked the apples off the ground for fear they would go to waste! I hope your sponge cake turns out! I agree we must become more artful as we age; it keeps life interesting! I chuckled when I read about the strawberries. My son, Mik, came down from the mountains last summer to pick me up for a camping trip and he had to go by his house to water the outdoor plants. The summer can be brutal on plants in the desert! He asked if I would water them while he did other things and his strawberry plants were coming in beautifully. One plant had a lone strawberry, so ripe, so luscious, and I nearly picked it. Then up at camp his girlfriend inquired of the lone berry and she was relieved that I did not scarf it down! lol Too funny on the goose following you around. We just had chickens growing up and so did my kids. There were two of the same breed and the kids chuckled at them being twins so they them Henny and Penny! They had three wheel bikes, forget the name, and Jes would hold a chicken in her lap and ride around the property! It was so comical to watch the chickens do what she wanted!
I have been spending the last few days getting my place ready for winter! After last year it's tough to predict what might happen. I decided to take down my bike warehouse but the problem is finding enough storage room. I don't want to put them on my covered porch but I many not have any other option. All I know is that if we get a freak snowstorm, or even a lot of rain with freezing temps I will still have a mess on my hands. Today was the day to take it apart completely because it's the last warm day for a while and my football (American football) game is on in the afternoon! Ugh! Right now it is too cold to be outside, 37F, so I haven't a clue if I will get it done, or go at it tomorrow when it is not as warm. I think I need to move to the tropics! lol Here's a hug for you! sam

I have a treadmill but do have a mountain bike I haven't been able to ride for a couple of years. Old friend of mine is just back from hospital after getting hit by a truck. We have to buy our strawberries, mostly from California and our apple tree apples we leave for the deer and bears and the crows. Have a jolly Sunday my friend.

Re: Can't imagine you as a wolf..or even trying to be one, CCT..:)
Lo Ray, I have just six tomato plants late ones in a tiny greenhouse, the trouble with store bought ones is they are usually picked before they are ripe. Tinned ones are supposed to be nutritious.Of course outdoor one's are tops, but it is hard to grow them outdoors here because it is too damp or something and they succumb to mildew. Take it easy.

Re: The soil here is not bad...but a bit too much clay. I buy enriched soil
Well you are doing OK . Kabu , but personaly I would not use woodchips, because they use up nutriments as they break down in the soil and they are orrible. The bags of compost are not what they used to be. I am trying a pure peat compost 50-50 with my lovely rich looking crumbly top soil. I do wish I could send you half a ton.

The soil here is not bad...but a bit too much clay. I buy enriched soil
and wood chips and enrich my beds and pots.
My rockeries have the soil dug out and the edges lined with weed cover plastic stuff and rocks piled. Then I fill in with enriched soil and woodchips. Some times I did a deep hole and plant a plastic pot with the boottm cut from it and fill it with soil and a plant.
natives like bushes I plant into the hole I've dug with a mixture of enriched and natural soil. they all seem to thrive.
I feed everything in a pot while they are flowering. it costs me some but the pleasure is worth it.

Can't imagine you as a wolf..or even trying to be one, CCT..:)

..a gentle soul, methinks..End of season here too, tho' a few yummy tomatoes from the neighbors trickled in this week. I expect that will be it. I will miss them, the store bought/greenhouse ones just don't have the flavor.

Good verse...

Sometimes I get frustrated with the things that people do or do not do as well.
