I think her mother was right to remove her when she had other means of support if she had to be labeled to help.

Well the girls were lucky Kabu a servant or a housemaids lot was not a lucky one, the class distinction was rife in those days, big foot always stamped on the weak.

Oh gosh yes, helping out a neighbour is one thing, but to be classed as the help is another matter entirely

my mother was the second to the youngest and her dad died when she was 3, she was immaculate house keeper to the point she would of rather done it herself

Kabuiepie-;)
Well you had me telephoning the 'Servant Girl' place and stirring the pot and here it was not the right day. Now you've got me in trouble with cat by asking him if he wants his supper, all because you know I have to get it for some strange reason. The pair of you are in cahoots.Grrr. LOL

Kabu, you really need to put all these family stories into book form

LOL - I did the same thing as your mom - traded my housework for the hayfield & milking!! I wouldn't mind being called a servant - as long as I get served. What?? That's not the way it works?

Oh I do agree, actually Mother and her sisters were left with very little
dignity because they had to beg for anything that they needed.

What's in a name? as Willie S. once asked.
It seems pride can be wounded by the words "servant girl," dropped casually to impress some bystander. Funny how ingrained in us is the idea of our place in the social order -- it's like we never left the UK.
