I couldn't come up with any rationale as to why the gal took the doctor's personal papers! It just doesn't add up! I wonder if it was a witches tree too! Amazing how superstitions can come about! sam

You do a fine job of utilizing the local dialect. That adds character.

what fun - I think people here miss out on the fun of walking home in the dark now. there are no roads without lights any more and the joys of darkness are forgotten

Shobana Well it was safer in those days I assume, but I expect you would think it was a doddle today.

No adnor it was the old girl who nicked the wellies. When one thinks about it, the scary thoughts we had were nothing to what one would feel today in the same circumstances.

Hi whispers I suppose it would not do them much good to fly around in the daytime not many mice around and they might have evolved to catch small birds.

Quite spooky I think to have to pass the owls and think the linoleum has werewolves in them CC..quite a story. I used to pass cemeteries when young to get to my grandma's house CC and we had this railway line crossing over to the place that I worked in..I can tell you that when dark summons I take the longer route. The only reason I took the cemetery route was to get back home early.

Your wonderful story makes me think how deprived we city kids were. I'd have reall enjoyed a walk in the dark past all the trees up to the house. No concrete and asphalt around.

I love reading your tales...they transport me to another era. I don't like owls either, they are always swooping around, almost like ghosts

Ah yes - that long walk through the fields and the trees, along a lane with no lights and those creepy, night noises behind us, in front of us...all around us! As a youngster I tried to think of pleasant things while walking there. It didn't always work, and I found myself nipping along as quick as my short legs could go! You have stirred memories, C.C. - thank you for that! ANd what was the doc doing with 2 boots for the same foot - he didn't steal them, did he? Not a doctor!!!

what fun your writing is....I wasn't scared myself so much going to bed
but I had a cousin, more like a sister on the farm next to ours and I enjoyed terrifying her with my stories. When I got into trouble for it, I pretended that I told her because I was so scared myself because someone older had told me.........
