That was the best laugh I have had all week, and no CC I will not re-invent them.

Re:
Well jay when one washes one's socks and does not have as spin dryer or a wife one pegs one's clothes on a clothes line. Today as you may know there are plastic and wooden articles that hold the socks on the line. In the olden days when men were men and women appreciated it. The gypsies made pegs basically it was a 5- 6 inch willow stick cut to that length a V shape made at the base it was then I assume fixed with a strip of tin about an inch from the opposite end to the first cut and then split as far as the tin. The old country women preferred them to the pincher pegs that were apt to break easily or dolly pegs machine made but not very efficient. So you can imagine to sit and make a three dozen of these after cutting the willow rods was not a very profitable occupation, outlay nothing except a few tacks reward if we bought them twelve pence to resell at sixpence a dozen. Don't try to reinvent them I have the patent.

CC I still don't know what a peg is, you probably told me in a previous blog, but I'm old. Your mother would have fit right in at my house.

Re:
Sam they did make flowers out of willow I think it must have been and dyed them with bright colours, of every thing was cheap a loaf three pence sell a dozen pegs for sixpence and buy fish and chips. lovely. When a housewife caught was by one of those old gnarled faces at the door, I expect if they did not have money they would have given them a bit of bread or a couple of eggs. Better to be blessed than scorned.

Re: CHIFFCHAFF
Ithink they occasionally asked for a bit of bread Wiley and of course there were rabbits and ways of catching birds with large nets at night, Some told fortunes and sold lucky heather which was not heather at all but not many knew that. We would have made a good couple of gippos Wiley.

Kabu they were renting the ground I suppose and no one cared as long as they were not in one's back yard. Eventually some took council houses

Rumor.. It must have been a very weak donkey or a wide topped hole in the stone quarries there were lots of large deep holes where the water had dissolved the limestone I suspect it was a deep hole Rumor. Not much health and safety around at thast time. Yes we could scare em.

C.C..it sounds like the gypsies could be a regular nuisance if they
wanted to be...(how in the world did they ever get a donkey down their well??..

..)...and that must have been quite the fright your mum gave them when she dressed up and pretended to be a bear.

..bet they didn't sleep too well that night..
