How your post brings back
memories.
There used to be a TV series on when I was small called 'Tales from Europe' and I vividly remember the dramatisation of this story - to be (very often) repeated in a storybook I used to read to each of our children

Yes really good Kabu I haven't thought of the old guy for a long time. He did wear a peaked hat if I remember and was larger than a gnome more like a male stunted witch, if I am right. Well done and please accept this golden haystack badge for mowing.
