my ancestors shared in a liking for 'frogs legs' and yes, I have - well, it's like chicken.  This story is astoundingly rich and I'm so intrigued, that I would think I'll re-read again.  Astounding!  Love the imagination and the creativity - Amazing. E.E.

Re:
Well Sam it sounds like you got the straw from an organic farmer. Most crops are remarkably devoid of weeds. Although I think you will find out by trial and error. Do be careful of molds, which sometimes appear in hay and straw when it becomes wet and then dries. I think what is meant by well seasoned is rotted down into compost mixed with vegetable matter or manure. Of course it is quite damp here at times, (not this year).

I must say it reads like a movie script! I can visualize all generations getting a kick out of this saga! Well done C.C.! This is great reading! I saw on my new page from Blogit that you had asked in a reply comment how the straw was doing on my garden! At present it is performing to expectations! But it did not come about from the onset like I had hoped! So we live and learn! What happened was I did not remove the seeds from the beginning by merely shaking it out before I put it on my garden! I was at my daughter's house when a friend was coming to pick me up! My SIL had to go to my house to sort through some of her things so the friend could bring them! I asked her to go to my den and look out the window to see how my garden was faring! Well, her response was that it was filled with weeds! In fact it was not weeds, but straw growing! Upon my return I had to remove all the straw! Then I clipped the tall straw starts, put down a layer of newspaper then returned the straw to the garden! Now it is performing to expectations! I will tell you I plan to shake it and shake it and shake it next growing season before I put it on the garden! lol The recommendation is to use straw that is very well seasoned but I have this thing for neatness and ugly straw that is decomposing will not do! I am nuts that way but I want it nice! So I will tolerate the extra work to have it look pretty! I am waiting for the onions, carrots, lettuce and radishes to come up and then I will be posting an update of the garden! I intentionally planted them staggered so that it would all be ready at the same time this fall! I had thought of more than one planting but my son, Mik, started a garden this year and I have given him all my extra plants and seeds! I truly like using the straw because it holds the moisture in and it does go right through the newspaper, too! sam
