In Mauritius the education system is such that students have to take private tuition to learn better. So, most of the teachers do the work in tuition classes which should be done at school

I agree 100%. It is sad how the teachers of today have lost their priorities.

they are cutting teachers right and left, if they are good teachers they stay if not they are gone, but at the same time the classrooms are filled to the limit, how can they teach those that need the help the most

Justi
adnohr mentioned Quebec - let me mention Ontario, where we have the same problems, if not more so, even though 22 per cent of our budget is spent on education...

I wonder what needs to be done to get people back on the right track? We have that same awful problem with schools in Quebec...and most of the problems are caused by the politicians. My friend, who taught for 30 years, tells me she got out just in time...too much political BS going on in there now. Good post, Justi. Someone needs to say it, and you did a fine jub!

It seems like demands are flying from every which way, and not really doing much good at all.

Well I don't know anything about it Justi so I can't comment only to say . I know what you write always makes a lot of sense and I often wonder wish people like you were in political power at least you would shake things up a bit.

In education it is a little bit more involved than the union! It's called tenure! One a teacher has reached that status it become about a 9 year process to gather documentation to get a bad teacher out of the system! It usually becomes a wait it out situation when a teacher has 20 plus years; a little less difficult for a younger teacher! And, then toss in the union and its clout and it becomes an insurmountable task at times! The Unions tell them what they need to do and they follow it like lost sheep! sam

I totally agree with you Justi, in all points you make here. Unions , that performed an important role defending the rights of the workers at the beginning of the century, have outlasted their usefulness and they have gone from a fighting ally of the working class to a blackmailing, corrupt entity that does more harm than good. I raised 4 children, all attending private school. I paid for it with mine and my husband's hard work. At the same time I paid for public schools through the education taxes, schools my kids never attended and not even my neighbors did, because they bussed children from the other side of town in and ours to their neighborhood. Why? It never made sense to me! Vouchers would be a fair way to allow parents to decide what kind of education their children get and it would force the government to better the public schools so that they can compete with the private sector. Ah my friend... so much needs fixing... The Lord must be very amused watching the mess we have managed to make out of his perfect world... xoxoxoxo

I have always been a big fan of vouchers, we are throwing dollar after dollar at education and it just gets worse. I have to believe that a little competition would straighten education situation out...oh yea Justi, don't forget the steel industry was a victim of unions.

In Baltimore our education is in shambles, and there is nothing on the horizon that looks to change it. My heart is going out to those children, who deserve so much better...Our private schools do well just like yours do. Unfortunately, many of them have too high of a tuition for the average Jane and Joe to attend.
