I forgot to mention that there's even an opera about the magpie, La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) by Rossini, with some beautiful music - of course I'm sure you know about that...

I am glad that you enjoyed my Aussie bird. Actually theu were a pair but
one grabs a photo as they can. So perhaps two together are lucky forit was a lovely trip this year.
I suppose that they are related to the Raven I never thought of that before, but they are really fun and playful but beware whenthey are nesting. They will swoopand strike. I showed the grandchildren how to grab a stick and whirl it around your head and that keeps them away. So does feeding them ...they have a great memory and won't swoop on those that leave them dog/ cat food and a bit of bread.

Is it lucky to see them in pairs
as per the old rhyme about magpies: one for sorrow, two for joy etc?

Brilliant story, Kabu, and a lovely photo, too. They look very similar to British magpies, but I don't know whether our variety are mimics - never managed to get close enough to find out.

I love magpies Grandmummy. Your Aussie magpies are especially beautiful to me, as are all your Aussie animals. I can't wait to put up the calander you sent for Margaret and me! It will proudly adorn my bedroom wall.
Did it ever come? Please email me and let me know? I love you.

The magpies in our area love to tease the neighbour's cat, Natasha, who is getting a little old and slow. They would swoop down on her, brushing their wings on her face, fly away, only to return a few seconds later to nip her on the tail.

There's a magpie that lives in the Rocky Mountains -- I've seen him
when I was on camping trips -- they're so gorgeous with their black and white patterns. This one has two long tail feathers that trail behind when it flies. The tail feathers look like straws with a wide feather at the end of each, or miniature kites on strings. Exotic.

Fascinating birds. I can remember one of my kids doing an article on them for a school project. Are there some in Winnipeg really??

Fabulous! I love this! Of course, magpies are related to crows and ravens...Too bad we don't have any in this part of the country, at least I've never seen them here, although I've observed them in Winnipeg...

Kabuski ~ awww love that bird and the history you share, always

(

truth be told that's a nickname of mine, "magpie" ~ don't have a clue why...

) LOL --- but at any rate, I was thinking of Mr Graysome and this ---

--- wondering if a Magpie could overcome Mr. Graysome's territory ~
