My mother was always terribly fascinated by the tales of the gypsies in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) as told her by her mother and grandmother.

A young woman student at SIU when I was taking classes there
spoke to our philosophy class one day. The class was "Issues in Feminism," and her particular issue had to do with the word "gypsy." I had always connected it to something exotic and mysterious, fortune tellers, people who played music and told stories by firelight and traveled in caravans. And when Mama reached the end of her rope with us, and threatened to give us to the Gypsies, I remember wishing they'd come by and get me.
The student told of oppression, of townies throwing rocks to drive them away. Gypsy, she said was a slur, a bad word. We are Roma, she said. I was sorry to learn a word I'd always thought of as symbolic of adventure and a kind of glamor, was taken as an insult. If I were strictly PC in my mind, I'd erase Gypsy and pencil in Roma. But I can't help thinking of Gypsies in whirling skirts, gold earrings, free souls who laugh and dance around a campfire.

And I suppose little people met little people and they had littler people. Very interesting Kabu. Ahem' not any Romany blood in your veins perchance. Only I had this flash of you dancing around a camp fire a rabbit on a spit and fiddler sitting on the caravan steps, perhaps it was my Aunty.

I've always been a Gypsy at heart
LOL was even told that I had a past life as one...not sure about that but I do know that ever since I was a small child I had fantasies of being a gypsy and traveling from town to town. Ah the romanticism of a young girl...I still have that wanderlust that drives me.
But now has come the time for this gypsy to find her home, settle in and scare the hell out of the locals!

The Romani people are still looked upon with suspicion today. Perhaps failure to adapt could be the contributing factor.
