Re: Re:
Ok - so I did look up the meaning - and yes, I have seen and now will inspect more closely - wonder if my cabbage there in the hill country will share some space for these--- actually, earlier in Fall, when all the winged warriors and sprites carry on; its like a haze on my fields here and now, I am intriqued to cite them with a scope...a lens scope that is.  ~ E.E.

Re:
E.E. A lot of words have two meanings or more I appreciated your thrill of wearing something different as a little girl. This meaning believe it or not was for the tiniest little creatures hardly ever seen by mortals. Have you ever seen white fly on cabbages well you might when you look at yours under the leaves if they exist in your part of the world. I could photograph them I noticed some the other day if you haven't ever seen them. This is beside the point but Petties are the equivalent of a fairy fairy they do little jobs for fairies polishing wings and making little treats from pollen lots of things but mostly straightening petals they are pretty strong for their size when a few dozen combine forces.

This brings back such wonderful memories of days gone by and a sister long gone and the wonders we shared.  I always believed that she herself was a fairy in secret and only I knew.

CC - Oh my - but I got chills reading this.  So lovely all of this account or legend - mystical magic retold.
Petties - as in petticoats (as a youngun, the sweetest petticoat was made for me from my mamma's own hands - years back with pinafores as well - circa 1960's - of course it was for a Christmas play but oh, I loved wearing them) ~ and my Mamma also had gardens no matter; plants, flora, even cacti - everywhere.  She was known as the 'green thumb' Lady.  Sometimes we'd have just syrup and toast bits on our plates but, oh we had the loveliest gardens, because she nurtured them so.
Now, the sisters paid in gold?  ahhh --- could have been gold from those crowns (which is why I have to head back to E. Texas --- to get me gold)
and now, one has found the little ivory recording ~ and I take note - I'm making up a saucer of honey water now.  and meanwhile, I'll search myself for that Fairy Queen - could she be hiding, under the wild flowers trailing throughout the hills?  CC - this is a beautiful, lovely revelation.  What a glorious legend to read this morn... and I thank you for your diligent pen ~
I head out trusting, the Fairies and yes, Garden Gnomes to continue on ~ E.E.
