Awww, what a sweet story! It brings a smile and warmth to my heart. It is always the little things that make up a person.

Homes w/o dogs, missing a vital ingredient. Small ones can live to be 20!

LOL - so Dad finally showed he cared, huh? And then was embarrassed about it! Ah - these Alpha males! We had border collies on the farm too - and tests have shown they are the most intelligent breed of dogs. Really liked this post, Kabu. Hugs to y'all!

{ The other day I saw a man, walking two small collies but they looked like Lassie. They’re young borders or a small breed? I can’t Google now love. BC-A, Bill’s RJLst

Love this post and my Molly was a border collie but not high bred like you richer folks of course. Your dad sounds like me about Mr. Graysome love.

Wow, I guess your dad really did love those critters more than he showed.
Pre-divorce, I had an Australian Shepherd named Callie. She herded us on our four wheelers, and jumped up onto the trampoline to keep all three children in a tight little circle.
I adored her...so much so that I left her on the acreage when I fled the marriage. I didn't have the heart to put her in a small, fenced yard. She'd have hated it. She was black with a white 'tuxedo' marking. I still miss that dog.

Just dropping in and trying to catch up - what a fun story! And Border Collies are great, nothing like my spoiled, demanding and totally useless Poodle (well, he
does bark at the postman) - but then, I love him anyway...

What funny and heart warming times you describe from so long ago. Teddy made quite the impression on all...I wonder what Mr. Graysome would think about a dog in the house.

I think you're right, Border Collies are one of, if not the smartest
breed of dog. Funny about your dad getting all bent out of shape because you didn't worry about his best buddy.

One of the best dogs I ever had was at least part Border Collie, supposed to be all, he was adorable and loved to shake hands with everyone around him, could jump high fences, and kill or subdue any dog around him (unfortunately). Wild, but adorable. He survived a bad case of heart worms and was loved by the vets secretary and me. Along another line, e
ven alpha males bond apparently.

Kabu, We remember loved ones as magnified because of the oss, or if love is more a living thing that rides shotgun with us every day of our lives, so common that we barely notice, not taking for granted, just otherwise occupied in the struggle to survive? And then we feel it later in a moment of uspset. I think that's the way your dad was.

You were a tease, your poor daddy probably loved those dogs, but one should not pet a working dog . I had a border Collie once and they are so intelligent I used to take him with me at night and morning when I was feeding the chickens and he began to get fat. I wondered what was making his so and one day I turned round quickly and he lifted his head out the the chicken's trough in a flash, he was stealing the food when I looked away.

we've only ever had one dog, and I was just a kid back then...
we lived on the outskirts of Windsor, and one of our neighbours raised chickens..well, Toby, our dog, got a taste for them one day and the next day it was good bye to Toby.

..ever since then its been cats..

Border Collies are so darn smart.
From my experience as a long time vet tech, I think Border Collies and Australian Shepherds are too smart for their own good. Kinda like, scary smart!!

I love your stories Grandmummy. My Uncle Ned used to have a collie (not a black border collie) named Kelly and I loved her to ity bitsy bits! She's in Heaven now with all my other dog loves. I've been thinking a long while about possibly getting a service/companion therapy dog...I had my mind settled on a retriever, but maybe I'll look into a collie!
