I never would have thought to do that. Flies can be such a bother when outdoors, so a trick like this is really necessary!

Well you can purchase brown plastic bags that are suppose to deter wasps, they evidently believe it to be another nest. Taps has a good explanation about the flies.  I used to hate fly papers, fancy having them hanging over the dining table.

There's so much we don't understand in this world.
This is a darling little mystery that won't keep us up nights -- and if it works, it could make life just a little less irritating.  Thanks for this one, Kabu!

It works because the eyes of flies are among the most complex in the insect world. They are compound eyes with many individual facets, each representing a separate light-detecting unit.  No telling what the fly sees when he looks at the plastic bag filled with water and a few pennies--probably he thinks it is the eyes of a giant monster venus flytrap or something.
