I am reading Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol these days,I came across a few lines which I thought may interest you....."The goal of tatooing was never beauty. The goal was change. The act of tatooing one's skin was a transformative declaration of power: I am in control of my own flesh. The intoxicating feeling of control derived from physical transformation had addicted millions to flesh-altering practices.........."

I have no tatoos or piercings and have no interest in getting them. I don't find them to age that well. Besides, I have nothing that I wish to express that much.

Re: I TRIED to talk my mom outta getting a tattoo on her bicep that said "GUY!"
northsage_45 I see your point, as I roll off my chair laughing.

Tats are often more regretted than enjoyed. Not all, but some. I'd be bummed if I got some guy's name on my person, then ditched the guy....except couldn't ditch the guy, cause he was still 'under my skin', if you know what I mean....!

As a young and foolish lad I got tattoos
now I am older wiser and a touch bigger I am saving to get them removed.  I see tattoos and they remind me of my own shortsightedness

I don't care for tatoos either Grandmummy.  Too many health problems later down the line and so not worth it.

I don't really care for it either.  I have little brown spots that the sun has tatooed on my originally light-skinned body and that is enough for me.

I don't like it either, not even one little piece of that art...I think it
belongs on walls, not flesh.   Then again, what about a BL tattoo for your arm? hahahaha

I'm not crazy about it. Don't have any myself, but
I know some lovely people who have disfigured themselves for all time with stuff to make them "individual." My youngest son has his left arm done in some kind of paisley pattern from wrist to shoulder -- and you're right about the rowboat-Queen Mary thing. What's kind of okay, and maybe even artful on a well-muscled arm is altogether different on a curtain of flab...

Like you, I'm another old fuddy-duddy!
Kabu,
My theory is that all those Japanese neck tats, all say obscene things and we foolish North Americans go around declaring that we enjoy sex with farm animals, or some such nonsense, without realizing that we are walking billboards, announcing to the world that we are morons! I will one day become famous, when I am the very last human to have no tattoos, and the original number of orfices, as I was born with. Like you, I find most of those tats and piercings, to be ugly, self-mutilation. What will be next, cosmetic amputations! The whole world has gone mad, except for you and me, Kabu. And sometimes, I'm not too sure about YOU!

As far as I'm concerned, a woman's body should be decorated only with things that can be washed off with soap and water.  My personal opinion of course.
Not sure what I would say to the proud owner of a new one, who asks what I think.  If they don't ask, I don't say anything about them.
