Re: Standardized Testing
Actually part of standardized testing is not really about testing how much the students have learned but how well the school is teaching them. They use the average score in each school to determine whether or not that school curiculum and staff are working well.

Sometimes standardized testing can be a good thing but...

there are so many kids out there that learn just fine and know the material but when it comes down to the tests they balk or may even just misunderstand the questions. For instance I nearly flunked my biology class in high school not because I didn't know the material but because the test questions confused me. I think the teacher caught on to that when we went on a hike in the woods on campus and he noticed that I understood a lot more then my tests showed when I could point out things even the other students couldn't and I even spotted the rarest bird in the area and knew exactly what it was. Somehow I think that realization from the teacher was why I passed the class because my final grade and the actual points didn't quite add up.

Anyway my point is sometimes certain tests can confuse students and some students just don't test well. They may understand the material and be capable of applying it but not in the specific way that is required by those tests. I've seen plenty of well educated students do poorly on those tests for reasons such as those but if you put them in a situation where they can apply the knowlege in other ways they do just fine, especially in situations where they don't even realize that they're doing it.

Standardized Testing
I could get on my soap box about this.  I feel that our educators need to be tested as well as our children.  From my experience my children have had some poor teachers over the years. Case in point my daughter knew more about the assignment than her teacher, this was a few years ago so hopefully it has improved.

Standardized can be highly useful if they are treated as finding areas of weakness more than highlighting areas of strengths. We need to emphasize the total student insofar as competency levels. But, we prefer to size ourselves up, all nations to see who is doing the best job according to achievement levels! We miss the point dramatically with this attitude. It can be a very effective tool, though. Alabama schools are under investigation for erasures on standardized tests. It involves more than 180 schools, so it brings out the worst when the expectations are on number and not the comprehensive student! Very sad for me.Shelly

I'm not keen on standardized tests myself. I think they're more about learning how to take a test as opposed to imparting knowledge.

I'm not sure how I feel about standardized testing, Amanda
Kids have been out of school all week here too. We are in a state of emergency, so apparently they don't have to make the time up.
