I can see your point but many feel that this kind of friendship can come in
the way of a marital relationship

I had a similar experience with a male friend ...
and it wasn't until we both got married (to different people, that is) that we reunited as true friends. Time heals all ... but the process if tough to go through ... I know.

I guess many see friendship differently than we do!
I couldn't possibly agree with you MORE. In order to have friends, one must also BE a friend, through fair weather and foul. None of my friends is perfect, this would be an impossible requirement for anyone to meet. All I really need is to know that my friend wishes only the best for me, and I will be their friend for life.
Don't think that I could be friends with someone like Gore Vidal, whom I recall once said, "It is not enough for me to be successful, my friends must also fail, utterly!" (or words to that effect) Perhaps your friend is a bit bitter and shallow, like Vidal was.

Re: I am not sure I would do the same thing you did
Thank you Tzippy! It's just that this guy and I have known each other for years and were always "just friends" until recently, when he told me he fell in love with me.  We still would hang out despite that, but just after Christmas, he told me he couldn't hang out with me because I was married but still wanted to be friends. It's been terribly hard for me--losing a close friend like this.

I am not sure I would do the same thing you did
but, I would sure love to do that. Its great that you know what you want and you go for it. There is nothing wrong with defining your way to be a friend. It may  not be everyone's way but hell its your life , you make the rules, you go girl
