Re:
I admire your motive auslander, ut honestly that would be the last thing a muslim woman (in Australia) wearing the burkha would want.. they do have the option to wear only the hajib along with western clothing.. it's often a matter of convention and belief, not always simple repression.  We can't judge in this way without hearing both sides.
PS - have we gone too far, putting Barbie into a burkha?  East meets west (the "ee" phoneme again), or cultural insensitivity?

Well that's one way.. I wonder if she's thought this through..(smiles)?  I'm sure she meant well, poor soul.. this is only one step away from prostitution (I won't say any more, that's too big a can of worms!).

Goodness Naut, your imagination has no bounds
Still the suggestion you "reported" was an accepted form of support for widows with young children instead of relying on charity of the state (but this was 1000 years ago). Still, don't be surprise if women in traditional societies welcomed these measures, as single women  ("spinsters",widows, divorcees) are conisdered a burden, not just finanially, but also in the sense of having a reputation to protect. This is something that married women do not have to deal with and it explains why matchmaking (via websites and traditional methods) is still alive and kicking in many 3rd world countris countries (Muslim & otherwise).

: Poor, Single Mothers…
Why doesn't the gov. just have a slave market and cut all the red tape.  They are, after all, viewing the women as a necessary inconvenience and firing squads are frowned upon.  joab

I find it extremely difficult not to tear apart the woman's burka when I see one in the bus or on the street or anywhere else for that matter. How is it that we, as a 21st century country accept such inhuman treatment of women? I'm sure that if it were men in chains that we see in the bus or on the street there would be an uproar against this slavery. But it's JUST women, right?

Naut
Thank you for posting this. Am I the most naive human being on the planet? Is this a joke? If not, this is the saddest of stories. Is this Islamic charity? I liked your clever retort; however, the story itself if so sad.

As cloistered as women are kept in such a place, I can't help
wondering how there are any single mothers, poor or otherwise. From what I've read, women and girls are not allowed to go anywhere alone, the men in their family watch them like hawks. I guess daddy dearest can't sleep with one eye open.

I noticed that the backbenchers (all of them men) started thumping their palms on the table at the Kelantan State Assembly in a show of support.
