This was very interesting because I've never heard it from the artist's point of view!

Elinjo

Graffiti 'artists' are motivated by the same instincts that make my doggie pee on the trees and fire hydrants in our neighbourhood - he's marking 'his' territory...

(I had inadvertently stuck this into an earlier post...)

A lot of the graffiti here in the states is gang related. Some of it not gang related is really pretty and is art.

my daughters ex boyfriend was a graffiti artist but in reality he is very talented artist and should try to put it to good purpose.  He was one of those that was on the streets as a young child in and out of juvie and now might being go to jail.  My daughter was working on getting him to improve himself but he is just not grown up yet.

A lot of gangs love to use it to stake their territory...On really sad fronts some use it to honor a fallen comrade (i.e. RIP so-and-so)

Seems like I saw a news magazine on TV that featured an artist
who specialized in grafitti at first, and now has a gallery and is sought after as a teacher, no doubt in New York City or some other literate cultural center...

Wow! Some really interesting facts here. I had no idea people actually taught graffiti, as like you, have always considered it to be a form of vandalism. ButI do find some of it very artistic and hope the artists can work commercially. They certainly seem good enough.

A very interesting post.  Well done.  Personally, I have never liked grafitti, but I have to admit that some of it is very well done.
