Elinjo - This story is so cute and yes it happens. I have a GPS which I rarely use but in the event that I had to use it, it has come in handy. Now I will be much more careful of spelling the destination right though..lol.

Re:
Hallo Shelly! Thanks for visiting and your concern.

My daughter's very, very tired! She's due to start work again on Monday and has two big projects in store for her in the coming months; one for her job and preparation for a big milestone in her career in September when has to defend her PH.D. thesis. She reall needs peace and quiet! My son-in-law is taking the eldest child away for a few days and the youngest is visiting me this weekend. So at least she'll be able to relax for a few days.

Re: Handheld GPS units.
Hallo Guy, you sound as though you feel just as overwhelmed by all these 'state of the art wonders' gadgets as I am. I bought a new telephone a few weeks ago and the manual was nearly as heavy (also metaphorically) as the phone itself. All I really wanted it for was to ring up and receive calls, instead.....!

I am sure that you are as smart as any car or any other car driver and certainly much smarter than me with regard to technical matters, so sorry I do not know. All I know is that a GPS, fed with exactly the correct info, should save an awful lot of frustration.

Have you asked your buddy Craig if he knows how?
Best wishes
Elinjo

I never owned one myself but have used it to get to unfamiliar destinations. Worked well with me though it was always way off with the time of arrival.

Handheld GPS units.

  Elinjo,

My buddy Craig, gave me one of these GPS units, and at the time, it was a very good, "state of the art" one. I downloaded and printed out the owner/operator's manual. In order to know how to navigate properly, using this technilogical wonder, it would be like the equivalent of taking a full credit university class! As nice as it would be to be able to claim that i bothered to learn how to use it, I never bothered.

Now, most new cars can navigate via GPS, and I still can't. I"m smarter that nearly every car on the road, damn it! Probably even smarter, so how am I to explain the apparent exception to the logic, of all this?

         Anxiously awaiting your reply,

                  Guy

My youngest son is a hydrographer and you are so correct on the precise information and even then he says it is about intuition in the wild! Blessings to you my friend! How is your daughter holding up? I do not want to face this with my children but I know I will! I have all in my prayers, especially you since you had to give up things to be there for your daughter! You are an excellent mom and I'm certain she is ever so grateful! Shelly

Re: Elinjo
I'm sure it's useful too in the right hands....

Elinjo
I have one of those things and find it useful. And there was a case here no too long ago where a couple of car thieves followed the GPS directions in the car they had stolen and ended up somewhere at the Canada-US border, where they were arrested...

I'm not good at map-reading either. My ex-husband used to go off the deep end about it too....

no I dont but my daughter does on her cell phone, but I use map quest and it always takes me the round about way.  I have always been bad about reading maps and have been lost on more trips then I want to admit to, and my daugther is as bad

Yes, accuracy is very important. If you don't use these gadgets intelligently you are perhaps more likely to cause an accident. http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/gadgets/automotive/car-gps-accidents.htm/printable

to avoid typos...  What worries me is that students aren't being taught the rudimentaries of geography these days. To them north is the upward pointing arrow on a map, but they don't know how to figure out whether left is north or south when driving on an eastbound road.
