- Go to ‘Beatlemania’! The first nail in the Soviet coffin?
I think I am caught up now! I had not been reading for a couple of days trying to get projects finished around my home! It is never ending! I so enjoy your blog! Shelly

The Iron Curtain
Yep it was a dark time in the 1960's for those stopped from listening to the Beatles and experiencing other things in life that, today, we ALL take for granted. Thank God that wall came down and the Soviet is no more. Great Post

I certainly feel that music played a role. How much I am not so sure. Just more of a hunch.

I remember it all so well - the Beatles bursting on the scene, my father's disgust (he was a church organist), my mothers complete incomprehension over 'beatlemania' and all us kids just wanting louder and louder music to dance the night away. So glad it circumvented the authorities and reached the Soviet Union as well - I didn't know that.

No but the exposure helped the next generation to adapt to democracy. Rebellious operations could also reverse the outcome of the elections. Don’t forget the influence of our American propaganda on Radio Free Europe and the other one that I received on one of the international short wave bands on our Zenith console in the basement bar room. Absolutely and without a doubt! They and the many that followed, the whole genre, that explosion of fascinating music with its irreverent and ironic lyrics contributed immensely to the erosion of the entire tightly regimented Soviet bloc...
To the Nazis, jazz was 'decadent', too bad it didn't help much in that case...And there's a reason why today's Islamo-fascism fears contemporary (or any) Western music, and views it as the voice of Satan...

Re: For Northsage. The Beatles really DID change the world!
Thanks for your comment Guy. I've just let off steam in your blog about the way people are maligning MJ; it was steam in general and not an attack on your excellent post.

The Beatles really DID change the world!
Elinjo,
I was behind the curve, of the Beatles effect on music, back in the old days when they took the world by storm. About the time that I came to appreciate the musical genius of their last album, they released their next one, light years ahead of the last one, again leaving me in the dust. The only time that I didn't come to love their work, was their "Revolver" album, (What the HELL was that awful "#9" about, anyway?) I guess NOBODY is perfect.

This is one reason I enjoy stand-up comedy so much.
It aims at the status quo, takes on the establishment, makes fun of what needs to be made fun of. Music, of course, pulls the heart, inspires, but it and other art is deliciously subversive at times.

Interesting stuff, thanks. I do believe that Beatlemania helped to
bring changes.
