Jewish life and humor
Excellently written in my opinion, and with that wry humor that also comes with the values and traditions of Jewish cultural life.
Your post brings to mind my awesome Uncle Morris, who died 5 years ago at the age of 99, in Boston.
One visit when he was 96, he INSISTED on driving me to the T-subway station in the early morning rush hour.
We turned up his drive and left onto Beacon Street into a stream of traffic and directly opposite the rising sun. Uncle Morris slowed down because of the glare and I tried to tell him: Move the car over to the right to let the traffic pass. Ignoring me, he came to a dead stop - halting all the inbound traffic for about 10 miles down the road.
He sat quite still while the cars started to honk and people started to holler.
Uncle Morris, I said, you need to pull over so they can get past.
I can't see, he replied. I never drive if I can't see. No Jonathan, its no use; we'll have to wait. But Uncle Morris I said, there are about 50 cars waiting behind us!
So, let them wait, he answered calmly. I will not drive if I can't see. Besides, you know of course Jonathan, that Boston drivers are the worst...I mean really the worst in America! There is no respect or decency these days. Terrible drivers! Meanwhile we sat plum in the middle of the road and that was that.
I loved that man! He was a doctor; an anesthesiologist and he always told me that the secret of his longetivitywas quite simple ''red meat" . Whatever you do, never eat red meat, he used to tell me. It clogs the arteries.
Anyway thanks for your story; we're all the same tribe - that's the truth.
