- Go to Susan Boyle! “She comes fae Blackburn?”
mneme
There is a Blackburn in Lancashire, mneme - a rather larger Blackburn than the one in West Lothian. Your directional sense and your memory are both spot on.

hi johnmacnab
I have to confess I thought Blackburn was in Lancashire

- too much listening to the Beatles when I was young. It's a small world after all...

More like something in the air, Krisles. When the shale-oil refineries were working there was a continual stench of oil. I quite liked it, and I knew lots of people who worked there (including me) who couldn't breathe easily
until they were down-wind of the refinery. That song of Susan's was jaw-dropping, wasn't it? I wish her the world.

Thank you Joe. Let me know if there is anything else you want to know about the area - bearing in mind that I haven't lived in Scotland for 7 years and haven't visited in 4.

Wasn't it awesome, sam444. My mouth fell open, just a smidgin before I felt the tears burning my eyes. I wish her all the best.
Blackburn has a double set of traffic lights at the offset crossroads immediately north of the black burn (River Almond). It isn't quite as bad as I made it out - not now. There is ostensibly a main street running east/west, but there is no reason to stop on it apart from the lights. There are some private homes, and now that the council allows residents to buy their own homes, there are lots more. And some of the council houses are in good nick and a damn sight better than the one we lived in. It depended upon which decade the houses were built. But after noting all of this, it is still a place to bypass if possible.

I think you're right about the platinum album, Pat. She could probably do it now just from YouTube. Our daughters were born in Blackburn. When our elder was born, Susan Boyle would have been 5 years old and when our younger was born, she would have been 7. Hey! maybe our kids won't hold it against us now that they were born there. Now they can flick a few curls back and casually mention that Susan Boyle was born there.
As for the Irish storyteller's gift - I wish......But then again, my Mother's name was O'Donnell, and her Father was Irish. So there is some Blarney in here somewhere.

What a great post! What a great tour guide you are! I think Susan's shining moment is something all of us can relate to regardless of our past, present or future....most of us never feel completely entitled to whatever life and glory we've attained. Her glory is something we all vicariously share in.....and that magic she exudes is obviously something you also picked up...something in the water?

Being that I know very little about Scotland and Britain, I really appreciated this entry. After all, Susan Boyle is now a world-wide sensation, so anything about her--her background-where she came from, etc. ., is fascinating. Thanks for posting this. Enjoyed it a lot.

I say she has brought quite a bit of class to the ole neighborhood! What a special woman indeed! How fortuitous to have been a neighbor of sorts of hers! I adore her to no end! I want all the success she can possibly have because her talent is all that and more! I don't think I have ever seen a performance by an unknown put 4,000 people to tears with angelic beauty as she has in her voice! Wonderful of you to share this as well! sam

So, do all the folk fae Blackburn have a gift?
Johnny Mac has the storyteller's gift of gab as good or better than any Irishman's (since my uncle Mac was Irish and knew every Pat 'n Mike joke every told, I speak from experience), and Susan Boyle sings like an angel. Her first album will go platinum if my guess is any good at all. How sweet to see such a rare talent come to light.
