Shiva is the hebrew word for seven and it is seven days of mourning
from the day of the leviya (funeral) and also the fact that you sit shiva for seven close relatives ... mother, father, brother, sister, son,(G-d forbid) daughter,(G-d forbid) and your spouse.
You generally do not sit shiva for grandparents or grandchildren although I once knew of someone who did for his grandfather because of the closeness of the relationship and the fact that his grandfather had no children living. This young man's father was killed in one of Israel's many wars and he was the only son of his grandfather who was a holocaust survivor.
