A cry from a sad heart if I ever saw one. But are you quite sure why you want them back? Is it to help you relive the time and moments that gave rise to them? If so, it would only increase the pain you feel now, and it might be better to just let them go...

Not being able to see these letters is hard
but in some ways it is harder to see them for it can make one melancholy. He probably means to get around to it but has not - there are probably several reasons none easy to pin down. In my humble opinion I think it best to let go of these letters - they may still come back to you - but if you can let go of them from that place deep inside you, a symbolic burning, or let them fly away, let it go gently.

Old letters, I love to read old letters. It never occurred to me to wonder what my ex-hubby did with the love letters that I wrote to him. He is a keeper of things, so it wouldn't surprise me if he still had them even though he is remarried. Strange to think about.
