I sympathise.. it was the same when my dad died. I was closer to home then, but my brother in Qld couldn't get a flight home. Distance can become your enemy at times like these.

Mneme, I just found this blog. Fascinating because if you'd not
kept this you'd never remember it like this.
This is a date i will always remember. It was my birthday and I was in London. In the morning I rang my grandmother. It was also my late grandfather's birthday. I knew she would be thinking of me but she was of the generation that did not automatically think of making long distance calls. We had a long and good talk, about life and about Eastern Europe which was in transformation. I was working on international news at the newspaper then. That night i had a party at home. Next morning i received a call to say my grandmother had died in her sleep. Both me, and my mother were too far away to reach her funeral.
