Naut, well done from me too, for unscrambling for us the very complex concept of jihad.

Nautikos, isn't "jihad!" what the American cowboys always yelled while rounding up their cattle?
But, seriously, I always learn something when I read these posts of yours.

Doesn't narrow the field very much, does it?

Very interesting Naut... These posts of yours are very helpful because they defuse the unfounded fears and reasure us that is ok to be afraid at the same time... I can't explain it well but the end result is inner peace.  I guess who ever said "know your enemy" had the right idea for by learning about what scares us we can put it in perspective and half the time dissipate hysterical ideas.  Great job you are doing... Bravo!

ash, the short answer is, NO!...A slightly longer one is that 'jihad of the self' is a reflective, inward-looking endeavour, involving an 'examination' of the self and, possibly, the search for a mystical connection with Allah...(keep in mind that in my frame of reference there is no 'God' or 'Allah', so I am giving you the answer that a Muslim might give...)

It seems to me there is enough left open for those who would abuse it can have that freedom! this is a wonderful series Naut! I am pleased you are addressing this! Shelly

Re: Nautikos
Justi, the real operative word here is 'striving' and/or 'struggle'..., and the form it takes. As far as I know, Muslims pretty well believe in the 'standard version' of Satan, although I don't know if their version has horns and a tail...

Nautikos
This is where some of this gets very tricky. The operative word here is Satan. What is their definition of the rules of Satan. They are vastly different than other religions off the Book.

Yes, I've heard from moderate Muslim friends that Jihad is more introspective and less an outward "call to duty."  Good you make that distinction.  Mal
