I am coming a little late to this debate, which is just as well, since I need to think more about this topic...

Mariaki, in fact, if we don't love ourselves,

it doesn't matter who loves us, because we can't receive it: we can't feel that love or recognize it.  We can be surrounded by love, and still feel unloved, disregarded, disliked, if we have no respect or love or liking for ourselves.

Thanks for visiting and for your comments!

Well said and one of my very firm beliefs
if we don't love ourselves how can we expect anyone else to love us? That being said approval and personal contact is laterally imperative too; excellent post, many blessings and thanks

Metalrat, I do believe that self-love has to come first,
to develop wholesome relationships.  Practically speaking, though, most of us are lucky to balance our set of lights and shadows with those of another.  Perfect people, I imagine, would find it hard to find perfect partners, for the perfect relationship.  And where would the growing come in?  I think the real challenge for most people is to find a compatible fit.

mneme, sometimes it is healing to fast for a while...
And for some of us it is necessary to fast to learn to nurture ourselves.  Then we can come back to a healthier diet!  Good luck with it!  It is also important to know when to toss out the leftovers, and start fresh.

Ciel...
...I couldn't have said it better!
Humans are social beings and thrive on nurturing relationships.
It's in the absence of such relationships that we need to have developed the inner light and strength of will that carries us. And of course, such personal attributes also help in having and maintaining nurturing relationships. Kudos!

Ciel, you don't want to know lol.  I don't have anyone bar the fast-food company nowadays but that is preferable to being in a controlling marriage.
