Even the "hate-thingies" don't bother me much, as long as it's only speech. Talk is cheap.

Some view arguing as a contact sport. Not only must they win, but their adversaries must lose. Winning isn't about making the other guy cry uncle. Winning is convincing him you're right.

Yep, as Pat-b said. And the realization that with most, it would just be a waste of time trying to change the other's opinion anyhow! Mine and his/hers. Life is too short. Unless it is hate-thingies...then I will try to shout it down.

I have to agree with you Talion
and with Pat B - there comes a point where dissent acheives nothing. I never was one to argue for argument's sake - just ask my university tutors...

(I got better lol)

That's exactly my point. There are few, if any, real victories to be won here. At best, I can only make someone look like a fool (and there certainly are a few that deserve it), but that's not much of an accomplishment in the grand scheme of things.

I think we've all hopped away at some time or another. That comes with the territory.

I think the brain changes later in life, and a person no longer has to
prove their case, be right, make everybody back down. We get to a stage where we know what we know, and we give the other guy's experience and understanding a bit of credit. At least we admit he has a right to his mistaken opinion. It no longer matters whether some fool will give us the same courtesy. Maybe it's just that we no longer have the energy to joust over things that, in the long run, are beyond our ability to change anyway.

I personally choose high minded personal exclamations, declarations, and
often spout public idiocies, but, that's just me.
When beaten down by someone who is right, I cave, but when attacked by even bigger idiots, I just have to disagree politely.
I also don't go visiting fools, meanines or blockheads more than once or twice before their addresses drop off my post reading list. But, sometimes, like with the Mighty Holy Warrior, he just irked to irk and was fun to argue with.
But, I have left hopping away from blog posts' Comment Areas with my huge foot in my mouth, upon occasion.
