Religion is the packaging of a belief system: the rituals that acknowledge and reinforce the reality of a non-physical Truth.
Lincoln may have been of Jewish heritage, particularly the wisdoms and strictures of the Old Testament which would have set his values and imperatives, regardless of the fact that he seemed not to have expressed these things through formal religious ritual. If he was raised in a society that valued Jewish tradition and thought, he was also living in a society that assumed all the 'best' people were basing their lives on Christianity.
Seems to me he was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but transcended such labels by simply living the values and imperatives he derived from the Judeo-Christian heritage that surrounded him.

Interesting question. It kind of makes me wonder what kind of impact (if any) I would feel if I suddenly found out I was Jewish, or black, or the daughter of a horrible criminal, or long lost royalty, or anything different than what I am.

As far as my knowledge goes he seemed to have been a fine leader
