When I was a kid, I somehow realized that when people said "on accident" they were confusing "by accident" and "on purpose."  So to prevent myself from making that error, I trained myself to say, in my head, "on accident" and "by purpose."  I KNEW that "by purpose" was completely wrong, therefore it had to be "BY accident" and ON purpose."

Editormummy...
I was talking to my coworker today about the notice.  She said that in one of the elevators (we have four) someone crossed out "intensive purposes" and wrote in "intents and purposes."

I laughed and told her that I wanted to do the same thing, but didn't because I thought the cameras in the elevator would make it look like I was writing on the walls instead of on paper on the walls.

I will kill an adult child if one says, on accident, just one more time....

This is the kind of thing...
that give the Grammar Guru conniptions. She thinks it's the proliferation of desktop publishing and design software, which allows barely literate people the opportunity to prepare professional-looking printed items without an editor buffering them from the unsuspecting public. The Grammar Guru is going to go and drown her sorrows in a cup of Harney's hot cinnamon tea.
