Cop a hiding
could mean anything from a physical beating, verbal beating with loss of any privileges or just having the kid' lose face'. Respect for parents is very very strong here in China and to have your parents against you is just not done.

You have some good ideas except for one problem - not enough English speakers and too many Chinese. You would end up with one English speaker and 500 Chinese. Also we don't teachers really don't have enough free time available also.

What does ' the kid cops the hiding' mean?

How about having the Chnese music teacher and others form a conversation club with some Americans and they teach them about China in exchange for speaking English for free for an hour or two a week?

Our Brasilian Portuguese teacher had Brasilians in the community here get together once a week at an outdoor restaurant and just speak Portuguese as a social thing and then her students had to attend for extra points and for the free and for more interesting conversation.

English speakers could gather for tea and cookies once a week or for coke and chips and then the Chinese could come and just hang out and speak, practice for free for more time.

Or everyone attend an English speaking movie and then hang out for an hour or two talking about it together after the theater.
