Relationships

One of the more difficult aspects of Chinese culture is the idea of 'Guanxi' (Gwan She) or relationships. In the west we usually describe this as "you scatch my back then I scatch yours". 'Guanxi' and the system of credits and debits (I have forgotten the Chinese word sorry) is the root cause of... Sign in to see full entry.

Road Works

My wife hijacked my computer for a few days. She saw an interesting fictional police series on T.V. last Saturday and then she decided that she couldn't wait for it on T.V. and decided to watch all the episodes over the internet on my computer. At least there were only 23 episodes, if there were 35... Sign in to see full entry.

Trip to Tibet

One of my fondest memories is the trip to Tibet I made back in May of 2000. I was working for Ericsson in Beijing China at the time. For a couple of days I was trying to fix a fault over the phone from the guys who had installed a new system in Tibet. However their English was not the best and it... Sign in to see full entry.

An unusual name but her favorite number was seven. Her family name is Qi (chee) which is the same chinese pronunciation as the number seven. So she took the name Seven. She was a student at the school before I arrived, very pretty and outgoing. I was soon informed by the other teachers that she... Sign in to see full entry.

Crime in Shenyang

The one thing I enjoy here is that I feel safe walking the streets of Shenyang at any time of day or night. Violent street crime is practically non existant. Most violent crime is conducted behind closed doors and usually involves the crime gangs. There is family abuse also. There are no gangs of... Sign in to see full entry.

In my entry on Teachers

I mentioned that if loadmouth 'B' left, then life would be good. You wouldn't believe it but he quit a few days ago. Mind you he had been threatening to quit maybe 3 times a week since he started 6 months ago however it was like listening to the boy who cried wolf. What really pissed us off was that...
