Gomedome
Religious beliefs should most certainly be subjected to analytic scrutiny, otherwise it reamins in the realm of stupidity - truth standing on the crutches of belief which can be totally wrong - like untruth. Truth does not need any prop to stand. As for Adam eating the fruit of the tree of knowlege appearing as "God could only have been telling mankind to remain stupid and we will be happy, set me contemplating, and brought me on to a different take on the subject, which I shall post tonight. I would love to have your scrutiny on this. This is in response to your query: "I don't know what to say to people that promote this idea".. and thank you for inspiring me to the journey.

Luz_Briar - we've had a few of those types show up here on Blogit
One guy in particular ran a poll to see how many men had been deceived by women the same way that Adam was. Talk about blaming the entire human condition on women, sheesh, but not so surprisingly, this guy actually got a few comments from people responding to his poll in a serious manner. I told him that I have owned smarter dogs than him but of course, Satan puts those words in my mouth (according to him).
It just goes to show the power over those of limited mental faculty, of giving even the most nonsensical of stories undo credence by calling it the words of God. If that story was not written in a holy book with legions of people unwilling to look at it objectively, most people would say something to the effect of: "talking snakes . . . give me a break"

midget34 - first off - welcome to Blogit
You will find that there is an eclectic mix of people with differing beliefs on this site and I hope you enjoy your time here. With that in mind, I'll refrain from telling you what I think of sentences that begin with "God is . . . "

Re: To answer your question...
FineYoungSinger - That's something that I truly wish was emphasized more with children. Then maybe we wouldn't have so many adult aged people attempting to reconcile these stories with reality.

Re: Your tree of knowledge theory is right on target.
Pat_B - That is a reality I find truly "amazing" - how so many people can overlook what they need to overlook, to make the parts they want to work.

God is all about trust in things we do not understand.

To answer your question...
How can a person that doesn't know how to think accept the fact that the two conflicting creation stories are exactly that---STORIES. (Stories with a lesson, but ultimately stories.)

Your tree of knowledge theory is right on target.
That little parable isn't the only place in the good book where questioning and logic are discouraged. Nuff said.
