Afzal, What good does it do to not sleep--to stay awake worrying changes nothing.  What good does it do to not pray, to not trust in God?   I find that those who sleep because they trust in God and pray, are often the very ones who also give of themselves and of their possessions to aid those in need.

afzal, the world has always been so, in every generation in all of history

and before history, no matter which temple, god or goddess, church or pyramid one used to worship the sun and moon and madness, sometimes....

To notice this is good and to try to make it all better is good, but you cannot change much but the small things around you and yourself, of course.

Or, you can set out to try to change the entire world. That is a very big job and a tremendous headache. If you choose to do that, buy lots of aspirin.

Wise words.  The tension of opposites provides the path for the energy of life to flow.

Afzal
The world is full of pain....such is life.  It's the way it has to be.

There can never be one thing without an opposite.
You can't experience love, without knowing hate.
You can't know satiety without understanding hunger....

I am an agnostic myself, but I don't think I'd label the religious as
escapists, some of them are often hard-working and caring people

Seems is a key word.
I agree that many people hide behind not just religion but money, nationality, fear....etc. But seems is the key word. I think that Evil wants us to believe the worst. And that things are bad, but not as bad as it "seems"

yes, people try to escape by hiding behind religion.

Leaving our job in God's hands is the easy way out.  If things take a turn for the worst we can then blame God, the Devil or unbelievers and wash our hands in innocence while the unbelievers blame those who believe in God and the Devil.  I think most people are escapists, only problem is that we can never escape ourselves and reality, regardless of where we hide, be that in Churches, Mosques or University Campusses.
