We want to help, but...
We want to help, but sometimes there is nothing we can do! I have personal experience with people like this. They don't realize how much help they need, and if you're not a psychiatrist, it's not your job to provide that help. It sounds cold, but there are people who will suck you dry and not even appreciate you or be aware of what they are doing, so you have to know when to say, "I'm sorry, I can't help you."

I can see why you would be afraid of loosing your sanity. I would never be able to compartmentalize like that, I guess its a blessing you can. Wonderful story, Well written as always.
