- Go to Where do I find another paradise?
What a challenge
Paradise is everywhere - starting with you! But Turkey and Morocco sound good. I have been to Turkey and hope to be in Morocco in May, if all goes well. I would ike to be in a place that is well connected (Internet) and easy to get to and leave from. In ou part of the world (South Asia) there is Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka. For me, I like to be able to speak the language and fele grounded in the work. Is that a criteria for you?

I hope to be able to keep reading you. I am slightly envious though, I'd probably like trecking through ankle deep mud in an exotic place - for a time anyway. I would also like to move to miami too, it's ok to have dreams right.

Wow, a world traveller.
Maybe you could open up a book store in whichever place you choose? How fantastic that you know several languages and have seen so many places.

That reference to Halifax was supposed to be 'party town'...

As a Canadian, I am partial to the riches this country has to offer! Nova Scotia in the East, with Halifax, a very livable city, a part town, and a string of pearls along the South Shore, Mahone Bay, Chester, Peggy's Cove...more universities per capita than anywhere else, and you have the seaand gorgeous scenery...further East there's Cape Breton, with the world-famous Cabot Trail and the amazing Fortress of Louisbourg...and if you like lobster and oysters, here you can have your fill...in Quebec there's the absolutely gorgeous Gaspe peninsula, of which you can see a few pictures here: http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/Nautikos6191/484728
Then, further west, there's Quebec City and of course Montreal, both very 'European' with a charm all their own...And Toronto? It's the Canadian New York, only more livable, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and incredibnle food, and Ontario summers are among the nicest in the world...
And finally, out west, you have the Canadian Rockies, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island, where, as in the Maritimes, you have many artists and writers and yes, also bookstores...
And anywhere you have picturesque little towns were you can retreat, but a city relatively close, if you want to live it up...if you haven't seen Canada, you have missed the best part of North America...

vogue, My idea of paradise is a place with mountains and streams and trees and lakes and wildlife. Gapcohen wrote a travel post that got me checking out the Lake Placid area of New York with its 46 peaks to climb. Of course I'm past the age for climbing, but I can dream and remember.

Paradise
As you mentioned, progress helps, but it also hurts by eliminating the paradise you tried to find in the first place! I've been to Morocco and the Atlas Mountains. Not sure about the standard of living there. If you like camels, donkeys and goats, you'll be happy! I'm partial to Tuscany in Italy. Amazing food, warm people and gorgeous!

Re:
No, it was fiction and I will re-post it. I'll also do a member profile one of these days. I didn't dare to because I thought I am not good enough, but now I have found many faithful readers which makes me very proud and more confident. Thanks again my dear!

vogue, Of course this great post made me want to know more about you and I went looking for your member profile, again, before I remembered that you never did provide one for us. I depend on those "about me" pages and it bothers me no end when that is ignored by a good writer. So, as I often do, I went back to your very first post. What a shame, not one person had read it or left a comment. Did you ever post it again to give readers another chance? The title of that post was "Nightmare". Does that mean that it was just a dream? Or, did it really happen?

If you find one, let me know where it is. Great work, by the way.

Bookstores
Curiously, I live in a small mountain community in Southern California. Between this town and the next one, there are three bookstores. Maybe because so many old people live in these mountains.
Arizona and New Mexico still have a few idyllic places left but they are going fast. Mexico, perhaps?
Farther up the mountain here, there are places where you can watch deer, bighorn sheep and the occasional wild burro. Little pockets of private land in a National Forest. I'm not sure if there are any rentals, though. Still further up are the resort communities of Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead. Going down the other side are some more isolated settlements. I'm within half a mile of a freeway here.
Hope you find an enjoyable place.

I have to say the best thing I ever did was to move here over 25 years ago
we have the best of both worlds; quaint and new; modern and old; the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere if that's what you want or of being in the middle of everything! I love it here and of course there's always the weather; nothing can touch you when the sun shines almost every day! I hope you find your paradise my friend; take care
